Warp!: Chapter Four

Our homeroom teacher, Mr. Hashiguchi, enthusiastically researched and shared various information during our science classes. Even though we opened our textbooks, things like the shape of the moon became irrelevant, and we often got sidetracked.

“The cause of the warp phenomenon can be considered in two ways. One is individual abilities. However, the people who have warped here don’t seem to possess any special abilities. The other cause could be a distortion of space, combining separate spaces. Is it superhuman abilities or a spatial issue?”

“Teacher!”

Kikuchi raised his hand. He was good at science.

“Could someone have randomly caused people who aren’t related to each other to warp?”

“It’s possible as a prank. Someone might be laughing somewhere.”

“What about wormholes?”

“Since it’s a one-way passage, it’s entirely possible.”

“Is space really that unstable?”

“Newtonian space was defined by Einstein…”

While the two of them understood each other, it was all Greek to us. The math teacher also talked about space, and the Japanese teacher used warp-related science fiction novels as teaching materials.

“Remember words like ‘joint,’ ‘quim,’ and ‘schwarp space.’ The scenes from famous science fiction works are unfolding here, oh.”

Mr. Matsuura gazed into the distance and felt inspired. Other subject teachers were no less enthusiastic. The physical education teacher, Mr. Hayashi, used his knowledge of Aikido to teach us how to avoid suddenly appearing people, and the social studies teacher, Mr. Taki, passionately expressed his thoughts he had been holding in for a long time.

“Listen, everyone. The disruption of discipline has led to a disruption in space. Especially now, public order is in chaos, and there’s no one to set it right! Therefore, a warning has been issued by the transcendent beings.”

Mr. Taki raised his fist and seemed agitated. It appeared that he no longer cared about the students. The classroom fell silent. Everyone lowered their heads and avoided eye contact with the teacher, waiting for his next words. And at that moment, a loud voice rang out.

“Nyaaah!”

Everyone suddenly turned to the direction of the sound. It came from the back of the classroom. Simultaneously, everyone looked in that direction, and a cat slowly walked forward, raising its tail high.

“Who brought a cat here?!”

Mr. Taki waved his raised fist in panic. In the meantime, the cat continued advancing, reached the teacher’s podium, and started rubbing its cheek against the teacher’s slipper while purring.

“Gyaaaa! Someone, take this away! Ahhhh!”

The teacher seemed to shudder and foam at the mouth. The long-haired tiger-striped cat was picked up by Mr. Tomokawa and separated from the teacher. Class representative Mr. Hisaji rushed to the corridor to call an ambulance.

During the subsequent investigation, it was discovered that Mr. Taki had a severe cat allergy. Leaving that aside, it was determined that no one had brought the cat, and the cat had not entered on its own. According to Seto, who was sitting in the last row, the cat suddenly appeared as if it leaped over something in mid-air. It turned out that not only humans but also cats had warped. This was the first time we had witnessed a non-human warp at our school.
